A chemistry PhD opens doors to advanced molecular problem-solving careers. As a professional chemist or biochemist, you'll tackle real-world challenges and address significant societal issues that often cross disciplinary boundaries. Lehigh's Chemistry program offers graduate training designed to cultivate independent scientists capable of thriving in today's interdisciplinary research landscape. Our chemistry graduate students conduct research spanning from fundamental chemical studies to addressing complex, transdisciplinary challenges with practical applications.
A key focus in our Chemistry Department involves constructing molecular architectures to create functional nanostructures and advanced materials. This work includes developing conductive molecular solids, designing porous organic polymers for environmental applications, and synthesizing ultra-hard nanomaterials under extreme conditions. Our researchers not only create novel materials but also analyze their electrical, mechanical, and chemical characteristics, with particular emphasis on molecular electronics and solar energy applications. Cutting-edge nanoscale experimental techniques are enhanced by computational modeling to explore fundamental nanoscience principles.
