The PhD program equips students for careers in academia at community colleges and universities, as well as roles in public history, government agencies, and private industry. The History Department provides both Master of Arts (M.A.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees. With an intimate cohort of five to eight new students annually, our selective program ensures faculty provide personalized attention to each graduate. We take pride in our exceptional teaching, dedicated mentorship, and the academic achievements of our graduate students.
The curriculum leverages our faculty's extensive knowledge in 19th and 20th century American history. Professors contribute specialized expertise across various approaches, including political/legal history, socio-cultural studies, race and religion, gender studies, international affairs, Western U.S. history, and public history applications. Prospective students can review faculty profiles to discover research specialties and graduate advising opportunities. Additionally, history graduate students frequently collaborate with scholars from UM's interdisciplinary programs such as African-American Studies, Environmental Studies, Native American Studies, and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.
