The program provides in-depth academic exploration across various historical disciplines, including U.S. history, medieval studies, early modern and contemporary European studies, as well as specialized regions like China, Japan, the Middle East, South Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Students can also focus on interdisciplinary themes such as border studies, critical theory, gender history, economic and labor studies, imperial histories, environmental history, ethnic and national identity studies, legal and cultural history, popular culture studies, migration patterns, religious history, science and technology studies, and MENA/South Asian studies. Beyond core coursework in their primary concentration, participants engage with advanced historiography, select a secondary field, and complete coursework outside both their major and minor disciplines. Following the initial year, students undertake an intensive yearlong research seminar that produces a substantial research paper and culminates in a departmental presentation.
The PhD curriculum integrates structured coursework, specialized research seminars, language acquisition, and professional development to cultivate expertise in historical analysis, scholarly writing, and pedagogy. The first three years establish fundamental historical competencies before students transition to archival research aligned with their academic interests. This investigative work forms the basis for an original doctoral dissertation. Program duration typically spans 5-7 years, with variations depending on language requirements, geographical focus, and archival research demands.
Students with U.S. bachelor's degrees or equivalent degrees from institutions of recognized standing in other countries may apply for admission to Graduate Studies. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.
