German studies students are globally-minded and actively involved. They develop strong communication skills and analytical thinking while gaining deep insights into both historical traditions and modern intellectual movements. Our alumni excel across diverse professions, from German-related fields to other industries, demonstrating the program's effectiveness.
A German degree opens doors to numerous career paths and creates a solid base for either immediate employment or further academic pursuits. Education and teaching attract many of our students, as does nonprofit work at local and global scales. Our graduates have made their mark in education, community leadership, global projects, tech development, legal and medical fields, government, and creative industries. Others pursue advanced degrees in German studies, political science, history, education, business, law, medicine, public policy, social services, and speech pathology.
Through our partnership with the UM Office of Global Engagement, German students access exceptional international learning experiences. Annually, several majors receive Fulbright Teaching Awards for Germany or Austria, thanks to dedicated faculty guidance. Overseas study and research provide immersive language and cultural experiences - the perfect preparation for professional success after graduation. The program also complements other disciplines well, making German a popular choice for double majors at UM.
