Established in 1895, The University of Montana has consistently supported Classical studies throughout its history. Its inaugural faculty consisted of five members, including Father Aber, a beloved Classics professor known for creating the celebratory Aber Day tradition. Currently, the Classics Section within the Department of World Languages and Cultures employs four dedicated faculty members. In 1995, the department launched a Bachelor's degree program in Classical Civilization. This curriculum, centered on studying ancient texts through modern English translations, follows the conventional educational approach that dominated European and American institutions until the early 1900s, while being adapted to meet contemporary students' requirements and academic backgrounds.
