The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures provides graduate programs in Spanish and French, along with an MA specialization in foreign language instruction. Faculty and student seminars foster an interdisciplinary environment where researchers can share their latest projects. Studying abroad is highly recommended to enhance language proficiency, expand perspectives, and create lasting academic memories. This department at the University of Missouri uniquely specializes in Afro-Romance Studies nationwide. To promote scholarly partnerships, we founded the Institute for Languages and Literatures of the African Diaspora, which primarily highlights Francophone, Lusophone, and Hispanic authors of African descent.
The MALT (Master of Arts in Language Teaching) requires 30 graduate-level credit hours, with at least 21 credits in French or Spanish. Fifteen credits must be from 8000-level courses, including six within the department. Up to nine additional credits may be taken elsewhere with advisor approval.
Independent study courses (7960/8085) are limited to twelve total credits, with only one permitted per semester for MA students.
Transfer students may apply up to six credits from other institutions, provided the coursework was completed within the past eight years.
MALT candidates must file their Program of Study (M-1 form) with the Graduate School no later than the semester preceding their comprehensive exams.
