The Visual Studies PhD program integrates specialized education in art history, material culture, and media studies with public humanities engagement. This graduate program provides a mix of academic courses, community involvement, research projects, teaching experiences, and cross-disciplinary partnerships with professional programs, equipping students for roles in academia, cultural institutions, and the creative sector.
To earn the PhD degree, students must complete at least 72 credit hours of study. A minimum of 42 credits must be earned at the University of Missouri. Those transferring with an MA from another university may transfer up to 30 credits, while MU MA graduates can apply all previously earned credits toward the doctoral program.
The 72-credit requirement includes:
Six credits of foundational Visual Studies courses (ARH_VS 8110, ARH_VS 8120, and ARTGE_VS 9010)
Nine credits spanning three distinct historical periods or media studies areas
Twenty-seven credits (9 courses) in a primary concentration (a geographic and historical specialization aligned with current professional standards)
Fifteen credits (5 courses) in a secondary focus (a geographic, historical, or thematic specialization that supports the student's professional goals).
