The Doctor of Fine Arts (D.F.A.) is awarded by Yale University's President and Fellows to candidates who possess an M.F.A. in Dramaturgy and Dramatic Criticism. Recipients must have passed the M.F.A. comprehensive exams and produced an outstanding dissertation on a topic approved by the D.F.A. committee, which consists of the program's full-time faculty members.

Qualification Requirements

The David Geffen School of Drama welcomes applications from students from around the world. All applications are carefully reviewed regardless of citizenship or country of residence. Students applying from abroad follow essentially the same procedure and have the same application requirements as all other students. If English if not your first language, you must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) iBT by January 15, 2023. The school code for the TOEFL iBT is: 3988. We do not have a minimum TOEFL score but we expect candidates to be fluent in English. You may submit your application before your recommenders submit their letters of recommendation.
