After being admitted to the PhD program, students work with their primary advisor to design a customized academic plan. They'll fill out a Plan of Study form and assemble a committee that includes faculty from other departments as well as external members. These documents must be approved by the Graduate College, typically before the student's second year at the University of Missouri. The curriculum varies based on the student's background, objectives, and requirements. Research methodology courses should be prioritized early to facilitate dissertation preparation. Candidates must pass comprehensive oral and written examinations, in addition to completing original dissertation research and writing. While 78 credit hours represent the minimum requirement, many students accumulate 90 or more credits during their studies.
