This program offers a Bachelor of Science in Education with a specialization in Secondary Education and a focus on biology. After completing the initial teacher certification requirements, you'll receive state certification to teach biology at the high school level (Grades 9-12).
The curriculum is divided into three progressive phases:
Foundational Stage
Academic Studies
During the Foundational Stage, you'll primarily fulfill general education requirements while beginning introductory biology courses such as general biology and genetics.
Coursework emphasizes creating effective learning environments across developmental stages, while examining how cultural, political, historical, and economic factors impact students, educators, and educational institutions.
Practical Training
Foundational Stage field experiences involve:
Sixteen hours of classroom-based tutoring and small group instruction under teacher guidance.
Twenty hours of service-learning with community organizations (such as Big Brothers Big Sisters or Granny's House).
Intermediate Phase
Admission to the Intermediate Phase requires an application during your sophomore year spring semester. Detailed application information is available through your academic advisor.
Academic Studies
The Intermediate Phase focuses on biology teaching methodologies, covering scientific principles, assessment techniques for science education, and professional development for aspiring biology educators.
Practical Training:
This phase includes approximately 24 hours per semester of classroom experience, where you'll gradually progress from assisting individual students to leading small groups and eventually conducting full class instruction.
