The Department of Environmental Health Sciences (ENHS) fosters a diverse, collaborative environment where faculty excel in delivering cutting-edge education and investigating the interplay between environmental factors and human health, with specializations in microbiology, toxicology, and exposure science. Our research spans local communities, international settings, and even marine ecosystems.
ENHS investigates the bidirectional relationship between people and their surroundings. Environmental conditions shaped by human actions profoundly influence public health, while natural elements significantly affect human wellbeing. Studying these dynamic connections frequently integrates fundamental and practical disciplines (including biology, chemistry, engineering, public health, and medicine). We offer two master's degrees (Master of Public Health and Master of Science) alongside two doctoral options (a Ph.D. program and a dual Ph.D. in Epidemiology and Environmental Health Sciences).
The M.S. program emphasizes academic research, allowing customization based on personal interests and industry demands. This 36-credit-hour degree blends practical solutions, hands-on research (field or lab-based), and skill development to train competent environmental health professionals for both government and private organizations. Candidates produce a research thesis, with most graduates securing roles in public health agencies, environmental protection organizations, research facilities, consulting firms, corporations, and academic institutions. Career paths encompass research scientist, water quality expert, toxicology specialist, ecotoxicologist, nanotechnology researcher, air quality analyst, and environmental compliance officer.
