University of Minnesota's special education licensure programs produce educators who prioritize students, work cooperatively, and provide exceptional, tailored learning support. These professionals enhance the education and growth of infants, children, and adults with disabilities across diverse cultures. Graduates demonstrate expertise in: Collaborating with families and colleagues to address academic, social, behavioral, and life skills requirements for individuals with disabilities, Applying—and assisting others in implementing—research-backed teaching methods consistently to enhance student achievement, Making personalized educational choices based on trustworthy assessment information, Choosing and modifying teaching aids systematically to accommodate individual learning styles, developmental stages, and cultural backgrounds, Expanding learning possibilities for individuals with disabilities through the complete range of service options while maintaining high expectations, and Adhering to professional and ethical standards in their educational practice.
Anyone who has or will obtain a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the U.S. or a comparable degree from an officially recognized college or university outside the U.S. may apply for graduate admission.
The preferred undergraduate GPA for admittance to the program is 2.80.

The application deadline is March 1 for summer or fall admission.
