The doctoral program in musicology and ethnomusicology focuses on equipping students with the skills for academic research and instruction, emphasizing both comprehensive knowledge and specialized expertise. This program provides aspiring scholars with: Foundational courses for conducting in-depth research in their chosen discipline Opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration within a full-scale music school and leading research institution A flexible curriculum covering diverse historical eras, analytical approaches, and cultural contexts. Prospective PhD candidates should possess a master's degree in either musicology or ethnomusicology. The MA and PhD programs build upon each other, allowing coursework completed for the master's to count toward doctoral requirements. Doctoral candidates must prove proficiency in two foreign languages, with German and French or Italian being preferred. Alternative languages require approval from the division, which also oversees all language proficiency assessments.
