The Music Ph.D. program offers four specialized tracks: Composition, Music Studies, Music Theory, and Musicology. Each track features a compact set of core requirements, giving students flexibility to tailor their remaining coursework with faculty guidance to align with their academic or creative goals. The Music Studies concentration enables interdisciplinary combinations (such as Music Theory/Composition or Musicology/Music Theory) to address evolving trends in global music scholarship and creation. Temple University's Boyer College of Music and Dance provides this research-focused doctoral program where candidates can specialize in one of four distinct areas. Graduates establish careers in composition, academia, and contribute meaningfully to scholarly research. The program allows seven years for completion, accommodating both full-time and part-time students. Culminating the program, students produce a dissertation showcasing their research capabilities - composition students create original works as part of their final project.
The Musicology specialization explores music through historical and societal lenses, examining its cultural significance and performance aspects throughout different periods.
