As a compact division within a major music school, we provide graduate students with an ideal balance: outstanding access to research resources, exciting performance prospects, and plentiful teaching experiences, all while receiving highly personalized faculty guidance. Alongside our PhD program in music theory, we feature a theory pedagogy minor designed to equip performance-focused graduate students for teaching music theory at the collegiate level. Our regular colloquium series hosts renowned visiting scholars while also serving as a platform for faculty and students to present their latest research findings. The University of Iowa's theory faculty consists of a select group of researchers pioneering innovative work in transformational theory, popular music studies, critical approaches, modal theory, and historical music theory. Our scholarly focus extends from Renaissance music to contemporary works of the early 2000s.
