The Department of Classical and Near Eastern Religions and Cultures is an interdisciplinary unit that unites faculty and graduate students who might otherwise be spread across diverse academic programs. CNRC emphasizes thorough philological and literary education while maintaining the perspective that the ancient Mediterranean region should be examined as a culturally interconnected yet varied entity. While students can specialize in specific areas and time periods through different tracks, they are actively urged to explore courses across all departmental disciplines, fostering a comprehensive, cross-disciplinary methodology for both research and instruction. Additional resources include the Center for Medieval Studies, the Center for Jewish Studies, the Consortium for the Study of the Pre-Modern World, and the Program in Religious Studies.
