In 1969, the University launched its urban studies program. During the 1960s, examining cities, urban lifestyles, and urban design was seen as groundbreaking across various academic fields. This interdisciplinary major, primarily based in the College of Liberal Arts, incorporates courses from multiple undergraduate colleges. Students engage with a blend of theoretical, practical, experiential, and skills-oriented classes centered on urban themes like social/cultural dynamics, political economy and planning, infrastructure and environment, or global urban challenges. The curriculum features local experts who teach specialized topics including youth homelessness, public-private collaborations, transportation projects, and international housing comparisons. These professionals introduce students to diverse career paths available with an urban studies degree. The program strongly encourages international study opportunities. Urban studies majors gain insights into city operations while utilizing the Twin Cities' extensive resources to pursue their academic interests. A mandatory 140-hour internship helps students explore potential career directions, while the internship search process provides valuable job-seeking experience. Thanks to the program's extensive alumni network, numerous internship options are available each semester.
