The Cinema and Media Culture Studies (SCMC) program investigates film by highlighting its role within the complex web of social, historical, and cultural contexts of audiovisual expression. Foundational and elective courses are available both through the Department of Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature (CSCL) and various collaborating departments. This interdisciplinary approach allows students to trace the evolution of cinematic imagery and sound across the 19th and 20th centuries. The curriculum also emphasizes the importance of print, photography, radio, television, video, and digital media in comprehending the cinematic medium. Students gain skills to analyze how meaning is created and disseminated through film, particularly within mass cultural institutions, study historical film cultures, investigate cross-cultural and global aspects of film production and consumption, and explore theoretical frameworks that have influenced perspectives on cinema's relationship with other media forms.
