The program cultivates analytical abilities and methodological approaches essential for investigating Hispanic, Hispanic-American, and Luso-Brazilian languages and cultures. The department provides two major tracks (Spanish studies and combined Spanish-Portuguese studies) along with two minor options (Spanish studies and Portuguese studies). It's crucial to understand that these departmental majors and minors extend beyond mere language instruction in Spanish and Portuguese; they represent comprehensive liberal arts programs focused on literary, cultural, and linguistic studies of Spanish, Latin American, and/or Luso-Brazilian traditions, with language proficiency serving as the fundamental base. All major and minor pathways in this department commence with prerequisite language classes, succeeded by advanced language training (special accommodations can be arranged for native Spanish or Portuguese speakers). These are followed by courses developing critical analysis skills in Hispanic/Lusophone literature, culture, and linguistics, equipping students for specialized advanced coursework. The major programs conclude with a senior project completed through either a SPAN 5xxx course, PORT 5xxx course, or SPAN 3972W. The department actively recommends that majors and minors pursue study abroad opportunities in Spanish- or Portuguese-speaking regions. Students planning to fulfill department requirements through study abroad must consult with the department advisor before their departure.
