Religious studies students develop expertise in analyzing religious ideas, practices, organizations, and communities across different cultures and historical eras. As an inherently multidisciplinary field, religion draws scholarly attention from diverse viewpoints such as literary analysis, historical research, social sciences, artistic interpretation, and philosophical inquiry.
The religious studies curriculum offers two specialization paths. The religion, culture, and society pathway suits students interested in broad or comparative examination of faith traditions. Alternatively, the texts and traditions pathway caters to those wishing to intensively study one religious tradition through its primary sources in their original language. Both approaches investigate religion's role as a powerful cultural and societal influence shaping global concerns. All majors explore at least two religious traditions and create an interdisciplinary focus area comprising four thematically linked courses - which may center on specific practices, geographical regions, historical periods, or philosophical questions - subject to advisor approval.
