The Religious Studies program offers a liberal arts education focused on examining religious traditions through a critical lens. This major serves as a strong foundation for careers demanding creative thinking, analytical abilities, effective communication, and cultural sensitivity.
Our department equips students with interdisciplinary approaches from the humanities and social sciences to understand and value global religious diversity. Learners develop techniques for comparative religious study, applying these methodologies across various social, political, and spiritual settings. The program cultivates sought-after competencies in critical analysis and written expression, along with specialized knowledge of different belief systems that employers value in numerous professional fields.
Established in 1969 at California State University, Northridge, the Religious Studies Department provides options for majors, double majors, and minors. Course offerings span multiple traditions including comparative religion, Eastern faiths, Abrahamic religions, as well as intersections with ethics, arts, media, philosophy, history, and scientific perspectives. Flexible scheduling with summer terms and evening courses accommodates working students pursuing their degrees.
