The discipline of classics involves examining ancient Greek and Roman civilizations, including their political systems, societal structures, artistic achievements, and intellectual contributions. Spanning from the Bronze Age to late antiquity across the Mediterranean and Near East, this field investigates cultural interactions, hybrid identities, and the evolving connections between antiquity and modernity. Offering diverse courses in linguistics, literature, religion, history, and archaeology, the program encourages multidisciplinary approaches to understanding ancient societies. Students can choose from four specialized tracks: Greek, Latin, combined Greek and Latin, or Classical Civilization, each tailored to different academic goals. The Greek track delves into literary works, philosophical texts, religious practices, and material culture from Homeric epics through the classical period and beyond. Latin studies cover over fifteen centuries of literature from the Roman Republic to Renaissance humanism, alongside Roman history and art history, forming the foundation for modern Romance languages. The combined Greek and Latin track provides the most holistic view of classical antiquity, fostering comparative analysis of both civilizations' literary traditions while developing skills in cross-cultural interpretation - ideal preparation for graduate studies. The Classical Civilization option allows interdisciplinary exploration of Greco-Roman culture with reduced language requirements, making it particularly suitable for students pursuing complementary majors in fields influenced by classical heritage, such as literature, art history, or philosophy.
