The biblical studies program focuses on analyzing religious ideas and practices from the ancient Mediterranean world, spanning from 2000 BCE through Late Antiquity. This includes examination of the Hebrew Bible within its Near Eastern settings, Greco-Roman polytheism, and the historical backgrounds of early rabbinic Judaism and Christianity. Grounded in ancient scriptures, the curriculum emphasizes close reading of the Hebrew Bible, New Testament, and associated texts in their original languages while exploring their historical, intellectual, and religious environments. This cross-disciplinary approach investigates multiple faith traditions, highlighting key cultural exchanges in antiquity. Participants also investigate connections between ancient religious foundations and contemporary belief systems. The program provides rigorous training in at least one classical language (Greek or Hebrew) along with various textual analysis techniques from different historical periods.
