Students can fulfill all requirements for both degrees in eight semesters of full-time enrollment. This dual degree program caters to those interested in the intersection of law with urban and regional planning. Key overlapping areas include community development, real estate, land use policies, environmental regulations, and legislative matters concerning housing, economic growth, taxation, transportation, immigration, and related subjects. Participants must complete their first-year curriculum at one institution initially, then at the other during their second year. While students may start at either school, most JD/MURP candidates begin with law studies. In years three and four, learners can freely choose courses from either discipline, provided they meet all mandatory coursework obligations.
Applicants complete a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association; or complete an international degree that is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree from a college or university recognized and approved by the Ministry of Education or Commission responsible for higher education in the country where the degree is earned.
