The two-year Master of Urban Planning program equips students with the expertise, abilities, and practical training needed for a career in urban planning. The MUP curriculum combines foundational courses, elective options, a hands-on planning studio, departmental seminars, and a final capstone project or thesis. This program holds full accreditation from the Planning Accreditation Board. Our alumni pursue rewarding careers across various sectors including government bodies, international organizations, development agencies, nonprofits, community organizations, real estate firms, and planning consultancies.

Qualification Requirements

Complete applications must include the following, uploaded to your online application:

  • Official transcript(s)¬†from every institution you have previously attended.
  • Personal Statement:¬†5oo words or less describing your interests in planning and your aspirations for the MUP degree. Please be specific about influential courses, instructors, books, personal or professional experiences, and goals. . In addition, please feel free to provide relevant context related to unique challenges (personal and or academic) you may have encountered during this current environment on how it may affect your application. ¬†
  • Two recommendations (minimum). Please identify in your application the names of persons who will be writing recommendations. You are strongly encouraged to arrange for at least one from a person who knows your academic work. The individuals will receive an automated email message requesting a letter of recommendation on your behalf.
  • Resume¬†that outlines your work and educational background and experiences.

A bachelor's degree, or the equivalent, from an accredited/government recognized college or university. Most such degrees will be four or more years in length; UB recognizes some three-year degrees, but not all.
A B-grade (GPA of 3.0) or higher from your bachelor's degree (or equivalent) courses. Grade point averages from non-U.S. universities will be evaluated by UB's Office of International Admissions.
Appropriate standardized test scores (GRE, GMAT, LSAT, etc.). Not all programs require test scores. See the official academic test scores section below for more information.
