The orthodontics graduate program offers specialized training for qualified individuals seeking to excel in this field. Our faculty aims to develop future leaders in orthodontics across clinical practice, education, and research. The curriculum features flexibility, particularly in the third year, allowing students to focus more on clinical work, teaching, or research based on faculty guidance. Our objective is to equip each student with comprehensive foundational knowledge that can be customized to align with their professional aspirations in practice, research, or academia. During the third year, students typically complete treatment for most cases initiated in their first year. Founded in 1923, our orthodontics program holds the distinction of being the world's oldest degree-granting program in this specialty. It has consistently led the profession through research and academic contributions. This 35-month program, administered through Rackham Graduate School, awards an M.S. in Orthodontics and accepts seven new students each year. For those pursuing academic careers, a PhD option is available. Our faculty members play vital roles in the Craniofacial Anomalies team at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, where graduate students gain experience treating patients with developmental disorders at our dental school clinic. The program fosters interdisciplinary collaboration with other specialties like Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Prosthodontics, and Periodontics for complex cases. Since 1973, our department has hosted the prestigious Moyers Symposium, jointly organized with the University of Michigan Center for Human Growth and Development, recognized as the leading clinical research event in orthodontics. The program continues to leverage valuable research data from the Michigan Growth Study, including unique radiographic and dental cast records.
