The Master of Science in Human-Centered Design and Engineering (HCDE) is a graduate program tailored for students aiming to take on leadership positions in UX research and design, or to investigate theoretical and practical design challenges through a human-focused lens. This 31-credit program meets industry demand for skilled professionals capable of scientifically researching user needs, developing innovative solutions, and evaluating products or services. The interdisciplinary HCDE MS is jointly administered by the Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering Department in the College of Engineering and Computer Science and the Behavioral Sciences Department in the College of Arts, Science and Letters at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Careers in human-centered design are growing rapidly, with positions like UX designer, UI designer, interaction designer, usability specialist, and product designer becoming increasingly common. Like other graduate programs in the College of Engineering and Computer Science, HCDE courses are primarily scheduled for late afternoons and evenings to accommodate working professionals pursuing part-time studies. Students can complete the program fully on-campus, entirely online, or through a hybrid approach combining both formats.
