The M.A. program caters to University of Michigan students enrolled in professional programs or academic degrees outside philosophy who would benefit from graduate-level philosophical training. Admission is typically restricted to these students, with exceptions granted only at the discretion of the admissions committee following application review. Those wishing to transition from the M.A. to Ph.D. program must complete the standard application process and compete with all other applicants, receiving no preferential treatment. Accepted Ph.D. students may petition to have their M.A. coursework count toward doctoral requirements, though this isn't guaranteed.
