The Chemical Physics Program offers doctoral studies culminating in a Ph.D. degree, tailored for aspiring professionals seeking advanced expertise at the intersection of physics and chemistry. Participants can pursue interdisciplinary research spanning biophysics, chemistry, physics, engineering disciplines (chemical, electrical, materials, nuclear, mechanical), meteorology, and quantum science with information technology applications. This program is ideal for candidates holding bachelor's degrees in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Engineering, provided they possess strong foundational knowledge in mathematics and physical sciences for advanced studies in physics and physical chemistry. The curriculum includes rigorous coursework in quantum mechanics, quantum chemistry, spectroscopy, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, statistical mechanics, and biophysics, equipping students to investigate diverse research opportunities at the University of Maryland.
Administered by the Institute for Physical Science and Technology, the Chemical Physics Program involves collaboration with seven academic departments: Chemistry and Biochemistry, Physics, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials and Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Meteorology. A dedicated Chemical Physics Committee, composed of faculty representatives from participating departments and chaired by the Program Director, governs the program. Unique partnerships with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) enable students to conduct off-campus research under the joint guidance of government scientists and program faculty members.
The program is for students with undergraduate degrees in chemistry, physics or engineering. For those students with degrees in other disciplines, knowledge of calculus, differential equations, and vector algebra, as well as introductory mechanics, electricity and magnetism, and quantum mechanics is ordinarily expected.
