This program is tailored for individuals pursuing professional certification to teach Arabic as a second or foreign language. The MA in Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language (TAFL) offers comprehensive instruction in Arabic linguistics and specialized teaching methodologies, focusing particularly on Arabic language acquisition for non-native speakers. The curriculum includes structured classroom observation, hands-on teaching practice, and professional development through seminars and workshops. Students complete five mandatory core courses in Arabic linguistics, three elective courses covering Arabic language, literature, and linguistics, plus two interdisciplinary courses from fields like anthropology, education, linguistics, or psychology. Admission requires a bachelor's degree in Arabic, Education, English, Linguistics, or related fields, along with an Advanced Mid score on the UM Arabic Proficiency Test (conducted during admissions). Program duration varies based on prior qualifications; well-prepared candidates with strong Arabic and English skills can fulfill the 30-credit requirement within 3-4 semesters of full-time study.
Prerequisites for the MA in APP program include a B.A. in Arabic, Education, English, Linguistics, or related disciplines, and three years (or its equivalent) of Arabic language study.
