The examination of classical reception, which explores diverse interactions with the writings, artifacts, and concepts of ancient Greece and Rome across subsequent eras, has emerged as a significant advancement in Classical Studies during the last thirty years. This field has fostered connections with various disciplines and traditions, such as medieval and early modern scholarship, comparative literature, philosophy, political theory, translation studies, book history, film and media analysis, art and architectural history, cultural and postcolonial research, performance studies, and investigations into race, gender, and sexuality. The University of Michigan has been at the forefront of advancing classical reception studies in both research and education, demonstrated through initiatives organized by Contexts for Classics (CfC). For over two decades, this collaborative network has united faculty and students from multiple departments, including Classical Studies, the Modern Greek Program, Ancient History, Classical Art and Architecture, Comparative Literature, Medieval and Early Modern Studies, and Mediterranean Studies, among others.
