Nearly fifteen years back, Judith Stacey and Barrie Thorne expressed disappointment over sociology's lack of a feminist revolution. Since then, the field of gender and sexuality studies has grown more established yet paradoxically more complex. Today, every leading sociology department must include gender and sexuality studies in their curriculum. Following this trend, Michigan provides a foundational course on gender and sexuality, along with specialized research seminars and advanced graduate-level courses. (Students also have the option to take a qualifying exam in this field.) More significantly, Michigan's program highlights how feminist and queer theories are reshaping sociologists' approaches to broader disciplinary questions. In essence, Gender and Sexuality Studies functions both as a distinct academic discipline and as a transformative force within sociology itself.
