DISTINCT FROM MOST PROGRAMS providing standalone or combined PhDs in ancient philosophy, the University of Michigan requires students to concurrently complete two degrees: a PhD in either Philosophy or Classical Studies alongside an MA in the complementary discipline, adhering to each field's rigorous standards. Thanks to shared requirements, this dual-degree path can typically be completed within the conventional six-year PhD timeframe, depending on prior preparation and academic planning, though some students may require additional time. This framework embodies our interdisciplinary philosophy. Instead of seeking gaps between disciplines, we believe ancient philosophy thrives when combining each field's unique methodologies - whether logical analysis, classical literary criticism, understanding of political systems and religious practices, or papyrology (all areas where Michigan excels). Ancient philosophy benefits from diverse scholarly approaches, each offering distinct perspectives. Through interdisciplinary dialogue, these methods mutually enhance one another.

Philosophy PhD candidates dedicate their initial four to five semesters to coursework, building foundational philosophical and analytical abilities while refining their writing skills. This includes a mandatory first-semester proseminar on philosophical methodology. The program requires completion of eleven graduate philosophy courses and fulfillment of a logic requirement (via course or exam) before advancing to candidacy.
