The doctoral program is structured to span five years. As such, participants usually receive comprehensive funding throughout this period. The Sage School does not provide a standalone master's degree. Below are the key policies and prerequisites for earning a Philosophy Ph.D. (Note: The Sage School does not grant a separate M.A. in Philosophy.) Six enrollment units are required, with each unit representing successful completion of a full-time semester of academic work. Twelve advanced courses must be taken, covering these four distinct subject areas.
We look for a strong general undergraduate record and very strong indication of philosophical ability. The latter is often (but not always) demonstrated by a record of achievement in philosophy courses. We normally expect applicants to have a background in philosophy at least the equivalent of what a Cornell undergraduate philosophy major would have.
