Pharmaceutical Sciences is a vibrant, multidisciplinary domain that combines core concepts from physical and organic chemistry, engineering, biochemistry, and biology to enhance drug delivery methods and transform this knowledge into innovative treatments for human ailments. At the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy, our esteemed PharmSci faculty advance the field by investigating how drugs interact with biological systems and creating novel synthetic or biologically-based materials to refine these interactions for safer, more effective therapies.

Our department equips students with a shared vocabulary in pharmaceutical sciences through intensive coursework in biopharmaceutics, drug transport, pharmacokinetics & pharmacodynamics, and drug delivery systems. We further personalize their education by offering specialized electives in areas like cell and molecular biology, synthetic and macromolecular chemistry, chemical and biomedical engineering, materials science, physiology, and pharmacology. With this robust, customized foundation in both fundamental and applied sciences, our graduates are prepared to contribute meaningfully to groundbreaking research and advancements in the field.

Qualification Requirements

Admissions to the PhD program in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at UM is granted to students who have a superior record of achievement in their previous studies and show a strong potential to succeed at an advanced level of study. Successful applicants typically hold a BS degree in pharmacy, chemistry, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, cellular and molecular biology, biological chemistry, or another comparable field of study. Those admitted to the PhD program normally have a strong GPA and excellent letters of recommendation.

GRE scores are valid for 5 years.
TOEFL scores are valid for 2 years.
