The Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) curriculum delivers specialized training across multiple disciplines, covering pharmaceutical technology, biopharmaceutics, medicinal chemistry and natural products, pharmaceutical socioeconomics, pharmacotherapy, patient care, clinical and hospital pharmacy, as well as biotechnology components. Upon completing the program, graduates become eligible to sit for pharmacist licensing examinations.
This four-year professional pharmacy program follows a minimum two-year pre-pharmacy foundation, which must be completed either in the University of Iowa's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences or at an accredited community/liberal arts college in the U.S. or Canada. Pre-pharmacy students must fulfill all prerequisite courses for PharmD admission (detailed in the Admission section of this catalog). Ideally, students should finish all 24 semester hours of liberal arts/UI GE CLAS Core electives before starting the PharmD program. Recommended coursework includes ethics, communication, computer science, business, behavioral and social sciences, and humanities. Note that physical education, applied music, and studio art classes do not qualify as general education electives.
Students must have the following prerequisites for entry into the PharmD: Rhetoric: 4 sh; General Chemistry with lab: 8 sh; Calculus: 3 - 4 sh; General Biology with lab: 8 sh; Organic Chemistry: 6 sh; Biochemistry: 3 sh; Human Physiology: 3 - 4 sh; Human Anatomy: 3 sh; Microbiology with lab: 4 sh; Statistics: 3 sh; Microeconomics: 3 - 4 sh; Physics: 1 year high school or 1 semester college with lab; General Education Electives: 12 sh. Students must have a minimum GPA although our average of those admitted is in the 3.3-3.4 range; and PCAT scores.
English Language Requirements:
An IELTS (International English Language Testing System) total score of 7.0, with no sub score less than 6.0.
TOEFL score requirements with score of 81 or higher on the Internet-based version of the test (iBT) and newly admitted graduate students who present iBT scores below 100 on the PBT.
TOEFL score requirements with score of 550 on Paper-based test (PBT) and newly admitted graduate students who present TOEFL scores below 600 on the PBT.
