The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in Oral Health Sciences is administered through the Rackham Graduate School and based at the School of Dentistry. This program aims to develop exceptional students into future leaders in oral health research. Key research focuses encompass: craniofacial developmental biology, mineralized tissues and musculoskeletal conditions, oral/pharyngeal oncology, inequalities in oral healthcare, infectious and immune-related oral diseases, oral sensory mechanisms and neural pathways, plus tissue regeneration engineering. Enrolled students complete a minimum of three laboratory rotations with faculty members, take foundational biostatistics coursework, and participate in specialized classes covering cellular/molecular biology, regenerative tissue engineering, and oral health research seminars. Candidates can choose advanced coursework in fundamental sciences, oral health disciplines, and their specific research concentration. PhD students must pass an oral qualifying examination by their second year to progress to doctoral candidacy.
GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale
Applicants complete a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association; or complete an international degree that is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree from a college or university recognized and approved by the Ministry of Education or Commission responsible for higher education in the country where the degree is earned.
