The English Language and Literature PhD program is structured for completion within six years following undergraduate studies. Participants can focus on various areas within British, American, or global English literatures while examining diverse critical, theoretical, and cultural approaches. The curriculum ensures students develop comprehensive literary understanding while acquiring research capabilities to produce original scholarly contributions. We believe education thrives in collaborative environments where peer interaction stimulates learning. To cultivate this cooperative atmosphere, we provide six years of guaranteed financial support to all accepted candidates. First and fifth-year students receive comprehensive fellowships covering living expenses, tuition, and healthcare. Subsequent years offer tuition, healthcare, and stipends through part-time teaching positions. Additionally, the department partners with Rackham Graduate School to fund professional development, including research travel and conference participation. Second-year fellowship opportunities include competitive dissertation awards from the graduate program, graduate school, and Humanities Institute.
