Prospective students looking to pursue studies in rhetoric, composition, literacy studies, or English education at the University of Michigan can apply for the collaborative Joint PhD program in English and Education (JPEE). This program has supported doctoral research across diverse fields including rhetorical theory, literacy studies, feminist perspectives, digital composition, disability research, queer theory, applied linguistics, English language scholarship, ethnic studies, creative writing pedagogy, and writing assessment methodologies. JPEE participants engage in both faculty-collaborated research initiatives—including projects focused on social justice and activism—alongside their independent dissertation work. The program provides five years of guaranteed full financial support, supplemented by resources for academic conference attendance, research endeavors, and summer scholarship activities.
