The Ancient History Program is a cross-departmental PhD initiative co-administered by the History and Classical Studies Departments. It mandates coursework from both departments, ensuring students develop expertise in classical disciplines like ancient languages while mastering historical analysis techniques. This dual approach equips graduates for academic careers in ancient history within either classics or history departments. University of Michigan students from other disciplines can pursue a Certificate in Greek and Roman History through this program. The program adopts an expansive view of Greek and Roman history, spanning from archaic Greece (circa 750 BCE) through late antiquity (around 500 CE), with some coverage extending to Bronze Age civilizations and early medieval periods. Geographically, it concentrates on territories within the Roman Empire, particularly Mediterranean regions, while also examining adjacent areas that interacted with Greco-Roman civilizations, including parts of Europe, the Near East, North Africa, and the Caucasus region.
