Pursuing a degree in Afroamerican and African Studies provides a thorough exploration of Africa and its global diaspora, encompassing the diverse cultures of people of African descent worldwide. As you examine various regions, cultural traditions, historical eras, and political landscapes, you'll gain specialized knowledge in one of our program's focal areas: Africa, African America, or the broader African Diaspora, while developing expertise in your selected concentration (such as Popular Culture and New Media, Health, or Gender and Sexuality Studies). DAAS serves as a dynamic intellectual center at the University of Michigan for interdisciplinary research on Africa and its diaspora. Our primary goal is to educate, motivate, illuminate, and push undergraduate students in this academic discipline. Our curriculum examines race, culture, and ethnicity as fundamental contemporary and historical concerns both in the United States and globally. We provide extensive learning opportunities about the African continent and foster creative, independent thought among our students, equipping them to recognize achievements and address challenges within the African diasporic community. Those who enroll in our courses develop multifaceted perspectives on diasporic African communities, their lived experiences, and relevant social issues.
