The University of Memphis Department of Theatre & Dance focuses on personalized growth for every student. Our Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre includes specializations in acting, musical theater, dance, dance science, and production design, while our Master of Fine Arts program offers concentrations in directing and production design. We customize our curriculum to match your aspirations. With substantial resources, we provide vibrant performance, design, and technical experiences across our four performance venues and classroom settings.

At the same time, we maintain a close-knit environment for focused mentorship. Our experienced faculty supports each student's growth, whether they're an emerging costume designer, musical theater artist, or production manager. Our program balances broad exploration of theatrical disciplines with deep specialization in chosen fields.
For MFA candidates, our department aims to equip students with the expertise and practical experience needed to excel as professional artists. Key components include an Internship and Practicum, along with additional assignments approved by graduate advisors. Annual portfolio reviews ensure students meet program standards, culminating in a final comprehensive examination. First-year directing students concentrate on staging techniques and actor collaboration, while second-year projects expand to include designer partnerships. Refer to the "Project Phases and Plans of Action" guidelines in the Production Practicum section to effectively prepare for both Directing Studio projects with your Advisory Committee.
