Pursuing an Italian Major within the Bachelor's program in World Languages and Literatures or opting for an Italian Minor at UM equips you with both linguistic proficiency and cultural understanding for diverse career opportunities. These include dynamic roles in business, communications, government, international nonprofits, museums, scientific fields, education, and tourism. Italian language skills prove especially valuable in industries where modern Italy excels: fashion, culinary arts, interior/graphic/furniture design, industrial machinery, robotics, transportation equipment, shipbuilding, and aerospace engineering. Given how language studies enhance other disciplines, Italian majors are encouraged to pursue dual majors or minors in areas like Art History, Music, International Business, International Studies, Political Science, or Hospitality and Resort Management. The University of Memphis' Italian Program focuses on specialized subjects including Dante studies, Italian cinema, cuisine, music, and business practices, while facilitating study abroad experiences for comprehensive learning.
The Department of World Languages and Literatures provides courses in multiple languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. Thirty dedicated faculty members contribute through research, teaching, and community engagement.
Students can earn a Bachelor's in World Languages with specialized tracks in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, or Spanish, while Arabic, Korean, Latin, Portuguese, and Russian programs offer more focused options. At the graduate level, a Master of Arts in Romance Languages allows specialization in French or Spanish, with coursework spanning literature, linguistics, cultural studies, and applied language skills.
Language study forms a cornerstone of the University's global vision, fostering profound cultural appreciation. As America expands its global trade networks, tourism industry, and international partnerships, understanding foreign cultures and civilizations becomes essential for educated, globally aware citizens.
