English majors gain lifelong skills, perspectives, and knowledge through a diverse selection of courses in literature, writing, linguistics, and cultural studies. Marquette's English program equips undergraduates for various career opportunities across multiple industries. Graduates have secured positions as writers, editors, legal assistants, and educators, while others have continued their studies in law, literature, library science, and academic administration. Offering three specialized concentrations, the English major suits students with diverse interests who seek versatile skills in writing, textual interpretation, and analytical reasoning while exploring literature and language. The Literature Concentration focuses on significant eras, authors, and English-language works through historical and cultural lenses. The Writing-Intensive English Concentration blends literary study with writing practice, emphasizing creative, professional, or rhetorical composition. The English Language Arts Concentration prepares future elementary or secondary educators through literature, language, and writing studies, specifically designed for Education majors.
This program immerses students in British, American, and global English literature and culture. Engage with classic works to sharpen your analytical abilities, expand your cultural literacy, and refine your writing style. Explore diverse historical voices while developing your unique creative perspective within this ongoing literary dialogue. The curriculum covers various historical periods, authors, literary forms, and thematic elements. Beyond literature courses, students may enroll in two writing-focused classes, including creative, professional, or rhetorical writing, with the option of a Writing Internship experience.
