The Department of World Languages and Literatures provides education in multiple languages, including Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. With thirty dedicated faculty members, the department focuses on research, teaching, and community engagement.
At the University of Memphis, students can pursue a bachelor's degree in World Languages with specializations in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, or Spanish. Additional options include Arabic, Korean, Latin, Portuguese, and Russian, though these programs are more limited. For graduate studies, the Master of Arts in Romance Languages allows concentrations in either French or Spanish, covering literature, linguistics, cultural studies, and specialized language applications.
Learning a world language plays a vital role in the University's global vision, fostering cultural understanding and appreciation. As the U.S. expands its global connections through trade, tourism, and international partnerships, knowledge of other cultures and languages becomes essential for well-rounded, educated individuals.
All students, both freshmen and transfer, must apply online for admission as an undergraduate student.

All international transfer applicants must have their international documents evaluated by a US credentialing agency that holds membership with the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES).
English proficiency may be satisfied two ways:
A minimum score or greater on any of the following English language tests:
