Looking to make a difference in the world? Whether your passion lies in renewable energy, healthcare improvements, or accessible housing, our Rhetoric and Public Advocacy program equips you with the knowledge, abilities, and hands-on experience necessary to evaluate, educate, and influence discussions and policies across public, corporate, and governmental spheres.
Public advocacy focuses on the realities of wielding influence in our diverse society. Becoming an impactful advocate demands proficiency in verbal and written communication, understanding of various information types, research capabilities, storytelling and argumentation skills, plus the aptitude to collaborate with communities and organizations across different settings. Our curriculum was designed by faculty who are experts in these fields - internationally acclaimed scholars and educators with backgrounds in political, healthcare, labor, and civil rights movements.
Program participants will undertake a demanding curriculum that combines communication and performance theories with practical advocacy opportunities. Upon completion, graduates will have finished a comprehensive senior research project and compiled a professional portfolio showcasing their expertise in oral, written, and digital communication formats, preparing them for advanced studies or professional pursuits.
To earn a Bachelor of Arts from Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, students must satisfy all BA requirements outlined by the college. Rhetoric and Public Advocacy majors also have the option to specialize in political communication.
Important: The Rhetoric and Public Advocacy degree is ideal for students pursuing a double major with this program. Those in other concentrations considering a double major should meet with a department advisor early in their academic journey to ensure timely completion of all requirements.
