UMass Dartmouth provides a Pre-health Professions Certificate designed for individuals who have ALREADY earned a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college but require additional undergraduate coursework to meet professional program prerequisites for their chosen allied health field. This structured program spans four semesters and covers:
Inorganic Chemistry with lab components (CHM 151, 161, 152, 162)
Prerequisite: successful completion of one college-level mathematics course.
Two semesters of Biology (BIO 121, 122, 131, 132)
Physics with laboratory sessions (PHY 101, 102, 103, and 104)
One or two semesters of Organic Chemistry with lab work (CHM 251/263, 252/264)
Elective (recommended)
One or two semesters of Biochemistry (CHM 411, 412)
One or two semesters of calculus (MTH 111, 112)
One or two semesters of Anatomy and Physiology (BIO 221, 222, 223, 224)
Important: Certain programs like physician assistant or nurse practitioner tracks mandate anatomy and physiology coursework.
Previous coursework may be eligible for transfer credit if completed within an appropriate timeframe. The mathematics prerequisite for inorganic chemistry could have been fulfilled at any point during your undergraduate studies. Alternatively, a placement exam is available for those without prior college-level math coursework.
Pre-Med and most pre-health students are advised to enroll in daytime classes during regular semesters. Some courses may have evening options through the Professional Continuing Education (PCE) office, as noted in registration materials. Many certificate students pursue studies part-time. To showcase academic capability in the sciences, students should consider taking at least two lab-based science courses for one semester, depending on their prior academic record.
