The UMass Boston Elementary Education MEd program prepares educators for initial licensure in elementary grades (1-6). This 36-credit curriculum provides graduate-level coursework that enhances teaching skills and knowledge.
Coursework covers developmental education approaches, subject-specific teaching methodologies, classroom organization strategies, inclusive education for students with disabilities, and instructional techniques for English Language Learners. The program culminates with a supervised teaching practicum and portfolio development. To qualify for licensure, candidates must achieve a passing score on the Massachusetts CAP (Candidate Assessment of Performance).
Participants can opt for the traditional campus-based track, taking 2-3 courses per semester. This path includes pre-practicum experience in the second-to-last semester and full practicum in the final semester, typically completed in 2-3 years depending on course load.
Alternatively, students may select the Teach Next Year (TNY) option, designed for those dedicated to improving outcomes in urban and high-need schools. This intensive, school-based cohort program runs for approximately 12 months, with admissions only available for summer enrollment.
