This program blends an M.Ed. with initial 4-8 teaching certification in subjects like English Language Arts/Reading, Social Studies, ELAR/SS, Math, Science, or Core Subjects. Originally established as a normal school—a higher education institution focused on teacher preparation—Texas State University has maintained its excellence in educator training for 125 years. It's the perfect option for career switchers seeking certification alongside a master's degree, designed to accommodate both full-time students and working professionals.
Our forward-thinking 4-8 C.M.Ed. programs (M.Ed. with teacher certification, C.M.Ed./CMED) provide the instructional expertise required to effectively teach young adolescents in age-appropriate ways. Students can specialize in various 4-8 content areas (English Language Arts and Reading (ELAR), Social Studies (SS), ELAR/SS, Math, Science, or Core Subjects) while engaging in broader educational discourse. While most classes are conducted online synchronously during evenings, some in-person coursework may be available at our San Marcos or Round Rock campuses.
Earning a master's in 4-8 elementary education opens doors to teaching across multiple grade levels (elementary, intermediate, or middle schools, grades 4-8). Graduates gain qualifications to teach in their specialization areas and can advance to roles like grade-level leaders, mentor teachers, or instructional coaches. This degree also lays the foundation for those pursuing district administration (Ed.D.) or academic careers (Ph.D.).
