Recognized by the Commission on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association since 2015, UMass Boston's PhD in Counseling Psychology equips doctoral candidates for careers as researchers, academic faculty, and clinical practitioners.

Our scientist-practitioner curriculum trains students to:

provide top-tier, research-backed psychological services and treatments
utilize practical research methods to enhance clinical work and investigate societal and psychological challenges
excel as educators and mentors
develop creative solutions to address educational and mental health inequities, enhance services for marginalized communities, and implement systemic reforms to promote social justice locally and globally

The Counseling Psychology program at UMass Boston cultivates future leaders in research, education, and social justice advocacy. We emphasize diverse research methodologies, multi-mentor guidance, and the application of human rights and social justice principles across local and international settings.

This full-time program typically spans five years, including a year-long internship. Applicants holding a master's degree in counseling or related fields may receive course credit reductions for equivalent coursework, though all students must complete at least three years of on-campus study plus internship. Most graduates finish the program in four years of campus study followed by one internship year.
